Jessica Costa, PhD.

I’m a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher in the Quintana Lab. I completed my bachelor’s in Biomedical Pharmacy and my master’s in Biomedical Research at the University of Coimbra, where I became interested in how the brain responds to stress and immune signals.
I earned my PhD in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine at the University of Coimbra, where I investigated how early-life stress alters microglial biology and affects inhibitory circuit development in the medial prefrontal cortex. My research combined behavioural, imaging, molecular, and electrophysiological approaches to explore microglial contributions to normal brain function.
In the Quintana Lab, I’m continuing to employ these techniques to study how the immune system shapes neuronal function, focusing on microglia as key mediators of immune influences on brain development and adult brain health.
